The adventures of a Mac fanboy

Ok, so I’m going out of order with some of these posts, ok, maybe only this one is out of order. There are a lot of things that I missed or wanted to catch up on in this post, consider this an update for most of you.

First things first, I attended my first MacWorld Expo and conference which was AMAZING. I got some much needed training in which, to be quite honest, I could use more of with CS5. I also ran into a TON of tech personalities and almost literally ran over Sarah Lane (she’s so tiny). Got to hear from a couple of photographers I follow online and even watch some live recording of TWiT.tv on the show floor.

As a huge fan of Data Robotics I made sure to stop at their booth to see what was up. Got a ton of free stuff and made some impulse buys of my own. The last day of the expo I went on a twitter scavenger hunt and won a DroboFS. As a side note I’m not as happy with it as I would like to be, but the apps are fun to play with. I don’t think I have the patients to do what I wanted to do with it so it resides in what can only be described as my server room in my house.

Outside of learning, spending money and checking out new tech I made it into the city and to the docks a little. I decided to walk down to the piers at sunrise and ended up walking from my hotel, to the piers, and along the water all the way to the Alcatraz tour boats. I had a Brandon moment and was like, I’m here, why not? So I spent a few hours on the rock and took some photos and got some serious exercise walking around the island.

While in SF I took, what I consider my masterpiece photo. It was a spur of the moment shot that I will be loving for years to come. It now resides on a wall of my house as a 20×30 silver print.

I also took the last night in the city to hit the comedy. Club to see Garfunkel and Oats who was playing with a bunch of other comedians, I tweeted about it, posted about it, look it up on my Facebook, I really don’t remember people’s names other then Chris Hardwick, Dave Koechner, Mike Phirman. Awesome night to wrap of the trip.

Now jumping ahead a bit, I made the purchase of the year. After MacWorld there was obviously speculation of an iPad 2. And then there was the announcement and my decision of waiting in line for it. Yes, I’m that guy. I am actually writing this post on the iPad right now… Type type type. I knew I would be traveling a lot more this year and decided it would be good for traveling, especially since I’m back with the cattle in economy class. I’m not going to go on about it here, but let’s just say I LOVE it. Reading, news, games, and the most important to me, watching movies is pretty epic.

Now to talk about work a little since I went into it a little last week. I really like the direction I am heading on communicating with advisers around the world. I can get very caught up in what I do at work and getting out of the office and into the field is pretty amazing to me. I joke that any time out of the office is a vacation, even if I am still working while out of the office. It’s the truth!

I hope to have plenty of more opportunities to meet with groups of advisers. I like the one on one interactions. Yes, there are some that won’t take advantage of it, but I think it helps with how I work and how I can effectively do my job. The more comfortable advisers are with me, the more likely they will want to work with me and send projects my way, which is the ultimate goal.

I think something must be wrong with me, I want more work. The goal is to be busy year around. I think I come up with new ideas daily on how to make that happen. For example I will be taking on my first design book for EducationUSA. This is going to be huge for me and hopefully help as a reference for the entire network. I feel like I’m a mini google. I think 20% of my time goes to thinking of new ideas and how to implement them for work.

Now onto the busy season… NAFSA in Vancouver and the EducationUSA Forum in DC… Right after Costa Rica. More to come on that next week.
