Google Chrome: The Web is What You Make of It

It all started with a prime time running of an add for Google Chrome that really took me by surprise.  It started with the thought, “what?  Google us promoting itself on broadcast tv?.”  After that shock wore off I starting thinking about the content. First thing is that it is a hot topic in the form of the online campaign called “It Gets Better.”  I have more then my share of gay friends and without going into polotics it’s not really something I usually think about when describing a person. I had previously seen the video “It Gets Better -Love Pixar” that they added to the campaign and now it is a huge deal.

I see activist groups like this as being on the bleeding edge of marketing to get their message out. There are a few reasons for this and it all begins with the people. As this Internet Revolution goes on we are given new tools to spread the word almost weekly.  The support networks have been the most accepting the internet as a powerful tool that gets their message out instantly and to the masses of the world. We see this in all sorts of revolutions, be it a very political revolution to a revolution in our way of thinking.

The new video “Google Chrome: Lady Gaga” continues the trend of the previous video.  Gaga is definitely a polarizing musician and I have to give her props on her self promotion.  This is more of a “look what I can do online with my community as I take the music world by storm.” This kind of success is that companies would die for and some of the larger ones would kill for.  We see this personal interaction with her fan base and how powerful that is.

Now for google’s promotion, they are all featured google products but this video is about social media in general.  These tools are available to everyone.  There is an older quote from a b-list movie I still watch from time to time called “Anti-Trust.”  ”Any kid working out of a garage can put us out of business.” I think in the age of social media this is totally the case.  All someone needs is an idea and the drive to promote themselves and their product. If you need examples of this you can just hop onto your computer or phone and try doing anything without running into one of these grass roots organizations.  Some were coded in college, some were thought up by a life changing experience but all of these products, ideas, innovations, messages, etc. start on the ground level and the internet has brought them into the public light.
